Winter Pest Control in South Carolina

Winter Pest Control

While summer is the peak period for pests, winter pest control in South Carolina is just as important as any other season. Winter is called the season of the rodent for a reason, and while insects are less active in the colder months, homes and businesses can still experience problems with cockroaches and other bugs. With that in mind, let’s discuss some tips that will make your home or building less prone to an infestation.

Winter Pest Control Tips

• Cleanliness Is the First Defense

The first step for effective winter pest control in South Carolina is maintaining clean spaces that are less attractive to pests. The search for food is what leads many pests indoors, and it doesn’t take much to attract their attention. Winter is a time when people are often cooped up indoors, and it can be easy to let things fall by the wayside. Avoid this if you can. Dust and vacuum often. Clean dishes immediately after eating, and remove the trash from your home or business on a daily basis.

• Safeguard the Perimeter Too

Pest are often drawn inside in search of warmth. There’s nothing you can do about that, but what you can do is make the perimeter of the house or building less attractive to pests in order to reduce your risk. Maintain a clutter-free zone around your foundation of at least several feet. You should also keep your trash and recycling bins as far away from your exterior walls as is practical, and trim plants so that they are not touching the siding.

• Maintain Optimal Humidity Levels

Controlling moisture is an important aspect of winter pest control in South Carolina because moisture attracts many insects, including silverfish, so avoid any accumulation of moisture around the foundation and in the living spaces. Excess moisture in the air generally isn’t a problem in winter because cold air is drier and dry air is also a byproduct of running HVAC equipment to generate heat. The exception here is when using a humidifier. If you do, be sure to keep relative humidity below 50%. Lower is better as far as pest control goes, and even as low as 30% is fine for humans and pets.
