Weevils are a small type of beetle that are found in all parts of the world. In North America there are 1,000 species of weevils, more than any other type of beetle in the country! All of them are small, dark in coloration, and have a distinct head shape that makes them easy to identify. Weevil Identification

Weevils range in size from approximately 3 to 10 millimeters. They vary in color from dark brown to black, and they have a snout on their head that can sometimes be as long as their bodies. Their mouths are located at the end of their snouts. Their eggs are nearly invisible which allows them to enter your home unnoticed. They often infest grain products such as cereal, pasta, flour, rice, dried pet food, and pet treats.

Diet

Dietary preferences vary among sub-species of weevils; some eat plants while others invade homes and eat packaged products. If you notice holes, tears, or other signs of damage on food products in your home, you should not consume them. When weevils invade your home or business, they are quick to gather around their desired food source.

Signs of Weevil Infestation

Weevils have extremely short lifespans, living an average of only two to three months. During that time, they rapidly reproduce. Some weevils are able to produce eggs without a mating partner. Females lay up to 250 eggs at a time, and they hatch within three days. For anyone experiencing a weevil infestation, the presence of the insects can quickly skyrocket from several dozen to well over 1,000 in as little as a month.

You will likely first notice weevils’ presence increasing, especially if you have a garden and they begin destroying your plants. Weevils also attack grains and seeds, so they could eat through bags or boxes in your pantry. Aside from signs of their eating habits, you may notice weevils crawling along walls and windows around your property, especially when you locate their entry points.
