More Fall and Winter Pests this Year

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warms that unseasonably warm temperatures and above-average rainfall, a trend seen in many parts of the region, have created ideal conditions for pests to thrive well into the fall and even winter months. If this pattern continues, homeowners may face more challenges with mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, and other pests.

Warm Weather Extends Mosquito Season

Mosquitoes are typically associated with the sweltering summer months, but this year, their presence may linger much longer. Warm, wet conditions provide a perfect environment for mosquito breeding. Standing water from heavy rainfall, combined with higher-than-average temperatures, accelerates the life cycle of mosquitoes, enabling their populations to grow rapidly.

These pests aren’t just a nuisance; they can also pose health risks by transmitting diseases like West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. Homeowners should remain vigilant, taking steps to eliminate standing water in birdbaths, gutters, and other areas around the yard. Wearing long sleeves, using insect repellent, and installing proper window screens can also help minimize exposure.

Cockroaches Are a Persistent Problem

Cockroaches are another pest that thrives in warm, damp conditions. These hardy insects often seek shelter indoors as temperatures cool, particularly if outdoor conditions remain wet.
